Members of the SickKids neonatal division are actively involved in both clinical and laboratory research. Our clinical research areas of interest include stabilisation for transport, pain assessment and pain management in newborn infants, disorders of the premature GI tract and intestinal failure and studies dealing with intravascular line placement and complications. The neonatal follow-up clinic is undertaking outcome studies on very low birth weight infants and infants with cardiac and other anomalies. Laboratory research centers on the factors involved in pulmonary maturation, development of the pulmonary vasculature and lung damage resulting from oxygen toxicity. Potential therapies for bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cystic fibrosis, including experimental gene transfer, are also being investigated.
