Specialty Certificate Nursing Students

Thank you for your interest in completing a specialty certificate placement at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). SickKids provides clinical placements in perioperative nursing, neonatal nursing and critical care nursing. This web page will provide you with details about the application process.

Specialty Certificate Placement Process

Specialty certificate placement requests are coordinated by Nursing Education at SickKids in collaboration with the academic placement coordinators.

  • All communication regarding placements needs to occur between the placement coordinator and Nursing Education at SickKids. SickKids will only accept requests forwarded by placement coordinators and/or faculty staff.
  • Please refer to the placement request deadlines for details about timelines. Please note that placement requests received after the application deadline will not be considered.
  • Placement application forms must be filled out by all candidates requesting a clinical placement at SickKids and submitted for approval to the responsible academic placement coordinator or faculty member. Candidates are required to consult with their academic placement coordinator before proceeding with the application process.
  • Applications are to be electronically signed by the placement coordinator and emailed to Nursing Education at SickKids before the placement application deadline.
  • Once all applications are reviewed, SickKids will contact the academic placement coordinators and provide placement information.  Candidates will be informed about the outcome of their placement requests by their placement coordinator.

Documentation Requirements Prior to Student Placement

A current Affiliation Agreement needs to be in place with The Hospital for Sick Children prior to any student placement. The placement coordinator needs to contact Nursing Education at SickKids to ensure that there is an agreement in place or to begin the process of establishing an agreement.
Once the specialty certificate placement has been confirmed, SickKids will require the following documents:

  • Immunization Form - completed for each student and forwarded to SickKids by the academic placement coordinator at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date
  • Student Agreement Form - completed for each student and forwarded to SickKids by the academic placement coordinator at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date
  • Police Records Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening - The cost and completion of this screening is responsibility of the student. Failure to provide an evidence of a Police Reference Check/ Vulnerable Sector Screening will prevent students from beginning their clinical placement at SickKids. The original Police Reference Check / Vulnerable Sector Screening document must be presented at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date.

Please note that once the clinical placement has been approved, Nursing Education will arrange for the following:

  • ID Badge
  • Clinical Systems Training (KidCare)
  • N95 mask fit testing if more than two years since last test
