Undergraduates

Thank you for your interest in the nursing student placement program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). As a teaching hospital we are committed to providing learning opportunities for nursing students. This web page will provide you with details about the process for obtaining nursing student placements at SickKids.

The following are instructions for the nursing student placement process. Please download and review the following items:

Communication with The Hospital for Sick Children

Undergraduate nursing student placements will be coordinated by the Nursing Education Department in collaboration with the university/academic placement coordinators.

  • Placement requests will NOT be accepted from undergraduate students directly. We will only accept requests from the academic institution placement coordinator.
  • All direct student requests will be returned to the requesting student.
  • Placement requests from out-of-country academic institutions are currently not accepted

Undergraduate Nursing Student Placement Information

Nursing Student Placement Request Form must be filled out by all undergraduate nursing students requesting a clinical placement at SickKids and submitted for approval to their academic placement coordinator.

1. Placement request form for undergraduate nursing students - inpatient units.

2. Placement request form for undergraduate nursing students - clinics.

3. Placement request form for student groups.

Please note that only one placement request will be accepted per student per term. A unit and a clinic placement requests will not be accepted for the same student in the same term. In addition, please be aware that the availability of many of our clinics changes from term to term. Many of our clinics are not suitable for students seeking a final consolidation placement.

  • Applications are to be electronically signed by the academic placement coordinator and emailed before the placement application deadline. Please note that applications received after the application deadline will not be considered. Each HSPnet placement request in the preceptor type of supervision needs to be accompanied by a placement request form.
  • Once all applications are reviewed, SickKids will contact the academic placement coordinators and provide preliminary placement information. Students will be informed about the outcome of their placement requests by their placement coordinator.
  • Prior to receiving a final confirmation of their acceptance for a placement at SickKids, students will be asked to contact an educator in the clinical area where they are placed to ensure a mutual understanding of goals and to confirm that learning needs can be appropriately met in the requested clinical area.

Documents Required Prior to Placement

A current Affiliation Agreement needs to be in place with SickKids prior to any student placement. The academic placement coordinator needs to contact the Nursing Education Department at SickKids to ensure that there is an agreement in place or to begin the process of establishing an agreement.

Once the student placement has been confirmed, SickKids will require the following documents:

  1. Immunization Form - completed for each student and forwarded to the Nursing Education Department at least 15 days prior to the placement start date.
  2. Student Agreement Form - completed for each student and forwarded to the Nursing Education Department at least 15 days prior to the placement start date.

Please note that once the clinical placement has been approved, SickKids will arrange for the following:

    • SickKids ID Badge
    • Windows Account
    • Clinical Systems Training (KidCare)
    • N95 mask fit testing if more than two years since last test
