Thank you for your interest in the nursing student placement program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). As a teaching hospital we are committed to providing learning opportunities for nursing students. This web page will provide you with details about the process for obtaining graduate nursing student placements at SickKids.

Communication with SickKids

Graduate nursing student placements are coordinated centrally in collaboration with the university/academic placement coordinators. Applicants for NP student placements at SickKids require acute pediatric care experience.

    •  All communication regarding graduate nursing student placements needs to occur between the academic placement coordinator and SickKids.
    • Please refer to the placement flowchart and the graduate nursing student placement deadlines for details about the steps and timelines of the application process. Please note that placement requests received after the application deadline will not be considered.

Graduate Nursing Student Placement Process

The following are guidelines that Graduate Nursing Students and Faculty need to follow in order to request a placement at SickKids:

    • A placement request form must be filled out by all graduate nursing students requesting a clinical placement at SickKids and submitted for approval to their academic placement coordinator.
    • Availability of SickKids NP and MN preceptors is communicated to the academic placement coordinators in advance of each semester. Graduate nursing students are required to consult with their academic placement coordinator before proceeding with the SickKids application process.
    •  Applications are to be electronically signed by the academic placement coordinator and emailed to nursing.studentplacements@sickkids.ca before the placement application deadline. Please note that applications received after the application deadline will not be considered.
    • Once all applications are reviewed, SickKids will contact the academic placement coordinators and provide preliminary placement information (Advance Notice of Placement). Graduate students will be informed about the outcome of their placement requests by their placement coordinator.
    • Prior to receiving a final confirmation of their acceptance for a placement at SickKids, graduate students will be asked to contact their preceptor directly to ensure a mutual understanding of goals and to confirm that learning needs can be appropriately met in the requested clinical area.

To ensure that graduate nursing students have a suitable match with a SickKids preceptor, we ask for the following:

    • Completed placement request form  outlining the graduate student’s interest in the selected area. Students can submit up to three placement requests to ensure that if their first choice cannot be accommodated, they have a chance for a placement in another area of interest. A separate request form should be submitted for each placement area/preceptor.
    • Current syllabus of the clinical course and the nursing program in general - this information helps SickKids to better understand the learning needs of students.

Documentation Requirements Prior to Student Placement

A current Affiliation Agreement needs to be in place with The Hospital for Sick Children prior to any student placement. The academic placement coordinator needs to contact SickKids to ensure that there is an agreement in place or to begin the process of establishing an agreement.

Once the graduate student placement has been confirmed, SickKids  will require the following documents:

    • SickKids Immunization Form- completed for each student and forwarded to SickKids by the academic placement coordinator at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date
    • Student Agreement Form - completed for each student and forwarded to SickKids by the academic placement coordinator at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date
    • Police Records Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening - The cost and completion of this screening is responsibility of the student. Failure to provide an evidence of a Police Reference Check/ Vulnerable Sector Screening will prevent students from beginning their clinical placement at SickKids. The original Police Reference Check / Vulnerable Sector Screening document must be presented to SickKids at least 15 calendar days prior to the placement start date.

Please note that once the clinical placement has been approved, SickKids will arrange for the following:

    • SickKids ID Badge
    • Clinical Systems Training (Epic, Chartmaxx as needed)
    • N95 mask fit testing if more than two years since last test
