Rickets
Definition
Rickets is a metabolic bone disease of the growing bone in children evidenced by changes in serum biochemistry and decreased mineralization of the growth plates and diaphyses.
Common Symptoms
Children may complain of bone pain and weakness, present with fractures, seizures, delay in growth and development and or skeletal deformities.
Most commonly rickets is due to a deficiency of Vitamin D. It may also be due to one of the forms of hypophosphatemic rickets( most common form is X-Linked hypophosphamemic rickets). Less often rickets may be result from Calcium deficiency.
Suggested Investigations
Blood work: Calcium (total and ionized), Phosphate, 25(OH) Vit D, Alk Pi, PTH, creatinine, serum pH, electrolytes (Na,K,Cl), glucose, 1,25(OH)2 Vit D
Randomt Urine: Ca/Cr ratio
Radiology: Rickets Survey
Diagnosis
The diagnosis is based on serum biochemistry and X ray findings that are consistent with rickets
Refer to the Calcium Clinic for diagnosis.
Rickets caused by vitamin D metabolism disorders other than D deficiency
Hypophosphatemic Rickets
