Medical Observership Program in Psychiatry (MOPP)
What is an observer?
An observer is typically a fully trained Medical Practitioner from Canada or abroad wishing to gain and transfer knowledge within a particular medical specialty. Such individuals are invited to apply for an Observership within the Department of Psychiatry for a period of no longer than 4 weeks, either in the fall or spring.
Applicants are asked to specify all of the areas they would be interested in Observing within the Department of Psychiatry (Anxiety Disorders, Neuropsychiatry, Eating Disorders, Infant Psychiatry, Medical Psychiatry and Crisis and Psychosis). These Observer opportunities exist and are limited only for individuals sponsored by and/or affiliated with the government or public institution(s) in which they are employed.
Observer Experience
As a passive observer experience, Observers will not be permitted direct interviewing or other patient intervention. Observers will participate through a Supervisor(s) in the area of interest within the Department of Psychiatry. These areas include (as above), however are not limited to one area should you have interests in Observing multiple programs. Such experiences will be arranged on a case by case basis. Observers will also be permitted to attend ongoing seminars and other educational training opportunities within the Department during the Observership period.
Observation Experience fees:
1 week - $1,000 CDN
2 weeks - $2,000 CDN
4 weeks - $3,000 CDN
Please note that an additional non-refundable SickKids Hospital Administration fee of $100 CDN will apply to the above noted fees. For Canadian citizens and Landed Immigrants, please contact the respective Program Director regarding fees. If financial commitment is not possible, please inquire about additional consideration.
Applicant Qualifications
• Notarized copy of Medical Degree from accredited international medical university
• Completed on-line application
• Current Curriculum Vitae
• Passport size photo of applicant
• Signed SickKids patient/parent confidentiality agreement
• Letter of support from current Program Director/Chief/Program Head
• Copy of Current Health Immunization Record (SickKids Occupational Health Department)
• Statement of applicant objectives and goals (maximum 1,000 words)
• If selected, applicants must be prepared to participate in a phone/teleconference interview
Please submit completed applications no later than July 31 for Fall applicants and December 31 for Spring applicants.
