Screen Time

What is screen time?

Screen time is the amount of time you spend watching TV, surfing the internet and playing video games.

How much screen time do you get per day?

Use the screen time log to start tracking the amount of time you spend everyday sitting in front of a screen, doing things like watching TV, DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer, for something other than school work.

Compare your screen time to your activity time

Compare your screen time log with your physical activity log. Do you spend more time sitting in front of a screen than playing and being physically active for at least 60 minutes a day? See How to fill out your screen time log for great tips on how to cut down your screen time.

Turn screen time into active time!

Turn the time you spend in front of a screen into an opportunity to be active.  Try stretching, lifting weights, jumping rope, running on the spot or doing jumping jacks - whatever gets you up and moving!

Set smart screen time limits

Inspire your family and set a good example in your household by limiting your screen time to a maximum of 2 hours every day.

Establish screen free times and zones

Make your bedroom a screen free zone! Kids who have a TV in their room watch 1.5 hours more TV a day than those who don’t.

Turn off the TV during meals. Family meals are a good time to talk to each other. Research shows that families who eat together tend to eat more nutritious meals. Make eating together a priority and schedule family meals at least two to three times a week.

Make time for activity

Watching TV can become a habit, and it’s easy to forget about other activities you can do. Explore other options like playing outside, joining a sports team, or learning a new activity.
