Scientist/Clinician-Scientist, Rare Disease Genetics and Genomics

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) Research Institute seeks an outstanding scientist or clinician scientist committed to studying the genetics and/or molecular mechanisms of disease, to fill a permanent position at the Scientist level with academic cross-appointment at the appropriate level in an academic department at the University of Toronto. SickKids is a world renowned Children’s Hospital with seven fully integrated research programs. The appointee will be located in our 21-storey state-of-the-art SickKids Research & Learning Tower in the Discovery District of downtown Toronto, offering a unique environment for medical science discoveries in close proximity to seven other academic hospitals/research centres and Canada’s largest university.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a research plan in the broad area of human molecular genetics and disease gene discovery with the intent of understanding mechanisms of disease and developing therapies. Research using patient cohorts and/or animal models, genome editing or disease modelling with stem cells is of interest, but other relevant approaches will also be considered. Research experience in therapies for paediatric diseases, including congenital disorders and rare diseases, will be prioritized.

Candidates must have a PhD, MD*, or MD*/PhD, significant postdoctoral experience and a record of scientific accomplishments in aforementioned research areas. The successful candidate will initiate and maintain an original, competitive, and independently funded research program of international calibre. Potential for collegial interaction will be an important element in attaining the position. The successful candidate will benefit from the interdepartmental molecular genetic and paediatric medicine initiatives at the University of Toronto as well as the extensive research and core facilities of SickKids, the University and its affiliated institutions for cell, tissue and whole animal imaging, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience within the range of 120K — 200K CAD. A competitive benefits package is being offered along with support for relocation expenses.

* Wherein a practicing MD, the successful candidate will have obtained an appropriate Certificate of Registration from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (license to practice), and appropriate VISA, if applicable.
