About Research Ethics Office

The Research Ethics Office (REO) at SickKids provides effective, integrated support for and administration of all aspects of the ethics review and approval process for research involving human participants. More specifically, the REO is responsible for the screening and review of new research projects, evaluation of ongoing research activities, and writing the letters of review.

The REO ensures that research on humans is conducted in compliance with the various guidelines, regulations and laws as well as other documents framing these activities. The Office also has a role in providing an interpretation of ethical principles and/or administrative processes to educate and support investigators in submitting their project to the Research Ethics Board (REB). Researchers are encouraged to consult with the REO staff in the development of their ethics submission packets and to engage with the REO staff during the review process for any assistance needed.

The REB and REO are responsive to changing best practices in research ethics and will attend to developments at the local, national and international levels. The REB and REO comply with the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2 2014), the ICH Guidance E6: Good Clinical Practice Consolidated Guideline; Health Canada Division 5 of the Food and Drug Regulations; the Ontario Personal Health Information Protection Act 2004; the U.S. Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP) directives; and the requirements of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Protection of Human Subjects regulations, 45 CFR part 46, and other relevant international declarations, such as the Helsinki Declaration on Research Ethics.
