REB Membership

Are you interested in being involved in a unique role in the area of research ethics? The SickKids Research Ethics Board (REB) is seeking qualified applicants to serve as members.

What are the required REB membership composition categories?

The REB is composed of an interdisciplinary and community representative group of individuals that can bring their respective perspectives and expertise to the review, discussion, deliberation and approval of research studies. Members fit into one of the following categories:

  • Physicians
  • Experts in relevant research disciplines, fields and methodologies
  • Community member (not affiliated with the institution)
  • Knowledgeable in ethics
  • Knowledgeable in the relevant law
  • Knowledgeable in privacy laws

What are the roles and responsibilities of a REB member?

  • Contributing to the review and approval of all research brought before the REB to ensure research conduct meets current ethical and scientific standards before study conduct commences
  • Contributing to the conduct of continuing review of on-going research
  • Periodically conduct expedited/delegated reviews with other members of the REB

What is the time commitment?

REB members must:

  • Attend a minimum of 10 (ten) full-board meetings per year
  • Spend on average 8 (eight) hours per month reviewing study submissions
  • Serve for a 3 (three) year renewable term

What are the mandatory requirements for REB Membership?

  • Able to meet the time commitment for REB membership
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Able to serve a 3 (three) year term as a voting REB member

In order to serve as a member on the REB, support from your immediate supervisor (or higher) should be obtained to fill this volunteer role.
