Post-doctoral Fellowship
What is the post-doctoral fellowship program?
The Post-Doctoral Fellowship program provides an opportunity for individuals who have obtained either a doctoral or medical degree to pursue at least two years of research training. All research must be carried out at SickKids under the supervision of a SickKids scientist.
What funding opportunities exist for post-doctoral fellows?
A number of external agencies provide competitive fellowships. Information on some of these agencies is available on the Research Institute Intranet. Fellows applying to the Research Training Competition (Restracomp) for funding support are rated based on the degrees they hold and are assessed on a number of criteria.
Who is eligible to apply to the post-doctoral fellowship program?
Individuals who have obtained either a PhD or a MD are eligible to apply for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Clinicians enrolled in this fellowship program are required to commit a minimum of 80 per cent of their time to research activities.
What is funded?
Should the applicant be successful, Restracomp funding is awarded for up to two years. Annual renewal of the award is mandatory and each year fellows must demonstrate that they have applied for external funding. The value of the stipend is based on the number of years of academic training completed by the applicant. Stipend levels can be found in the Restracomp Policies and Procedures manual available on the Research Institute Intranet.
How are applications rated?
Applicants are rated within the following categories:
- Fellows holding PhD degree (or MD without licence) = Junior Fellow
- Fellows holding PhD degree plus greater than two years post-doctoral experience = Senior Fellow
- Fellows holding Medical degree (with Ontario licence)
- Fellows holding PhD degree and Nursing/Health Professional degree (with licence)
There will be one Restracomp competition in 2011. The application deadline has been set for May 2, 2011. For more information, including the application guidelines, policy, and forms, please see the “Applications and Forms” section of this website.
