Stem cells in the bladder

We are focusing on examining the parameters that promote differentiation of skin-derived stem cells into functional smooth muscle. Using ex vivo distension models systems and the in vitro strain system (Flexcell), we are describing and querying the particular parameters in terms of MMPs and strain which are required for SKPs in isolation or in coculture with bladder cells. 

Another avenue we have examined is the role of hyaluronan in the process of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell growth. By understanding the mechanical and matrical environments that are required for differentiation, we hope to find a new method of integrating stem cells for repair and regeneration of the injured bladder.
