Clinical Research Services
Clinical Research at SickKids
One third of the research conducted at SickKids Research Institute is clinical research. Clinical research is patient-oriented research, and includes mechanisms of human disease, therapeutic interventions, clinical trials, the development of new technologies as well as epidemiologic and behavioral research, outcomes research and health services research.
Clinical Research Services (CRS) supports investigators, staff and trainees who conduct clinical research, and provides advice, support, materials and resources for all types of clinical research studies. CRS also provides an orientation program for new clinical research staff including a training manual, and various educational and professional development opportunities.
Clinical Research Services currently consists of the Clinical Research Office and the Research Ethics Board (REB). CRS also works collaboratively with other Research Institute and SickKids clinical departments and services to ensure a more integrated and efficient process for researchers conducting clinical research.
Research Institute clinical research support services include: the Biostatistics, Design and Analysis (BDA) core facility and the Clinical Research Centre, which includes the Clinical Investigation Unit (CIU) and the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory. Clinical Research Services works closely with Industry Partnerships & Commercialization for inter-institutional agreements and clinical trial agreements. Departments such as the Research Support Pharmacy, Health Records, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging are also actively involved in clinical research activities at SickKids.
