Research Activities

The laboratory pursues three main avenues of investigation.

1. Apoptosis-related mitochondrial dysfunction after neonatal cardiac surgery:
We have identified a component on postoperative mitochondrial dysfunction related to initiation of apoptosis signaling events which is evident within the first few hours after cardiac surgery. The neonate is particularly vulnerable to initiation of this process. We utilize cardiopulmonary bypass large animal models as well as Langendorf small animal models. Techniques include isolated mitochondrial respirometry, calcium-induced mitochondrial permeability transition assessments as well as quantitative confocal immunohistochemistry and western immunoblotting.

2. Remote ischemic preconditioning:
As a participant in the LeDuq-sponsored Transatlantic Collaborative Network, we have participated in evaluation of a proteomics approach to identify the substance(s) responsible for remote ischemic preconditioning and assess the relevant mechanisms and efficacy of myocardial preservation during cardiac surgery and after myocardial infarction.

3. As a pilot project, we have evaluated the use of a custom built intraventricular balloon pumps to modify ventricular loading conditions on a beat-to-beat basis to stimulate ventricular growth.
