Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Clinic
The Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Clinic (CDH) follows all children who are born with a congenital defect (hernia) in their diaphragm. These children require surgery and also have a defect in lung growth. In addition, nutritional problems are also frequently present.
The CDH is a multidisciplinary clinic, involving nurse practitioners, a paediatric surgeon, a paediatric respirologist and a dietitian. These children are also followed by cardiology and neonatology.
Although the majority of children with CDH go on to have healthy lives, many children have respiratory difficulties during the first few years of life, and require active and ongoing assessment and follow-up.
Children with CDH are usually followed until eighteen years of age, when they are transferred from SickKids to the care of an adult physician.
Patients must be referred by a Physician or Surgeon.
