Project Overview

The Marianna V. Vardinoyannis – ELPIDA Children’s Oncology Unit (MV-ELPIDA) was established at the 750-bed Agia Sopia Children’s Hospital (ASCH) in Athens, Greece in 2010. To position the MV-ELPIDA as a leading provider of paediatric oncology health care in Greece, ASCH engaged SickKids International (SKI) to explore opportunities for collaboration in clinical care practice, education and research.

To refine the focus of the partnership, SKI conducted a Diagnostic Assessment in November 2013 which culminated in a report that outlined the findings of the assessment, as well as recommendations in various focus areas. Each set of recommendations was based on international guidelines and best practice approaches, while also being contextualized in the Greek health-care system.

Since the completion of this Diagnostic Assessment, the partnership between SKI and ASCH has progressed on a number of fronts. Both parties have since participated in reciprocal site visits, with SickKids hosting ASCH nurses as part of an observership and nursing education visit. ASCH also hosted SickKids representatives to provide further education and training to Agia Sopia’s staff.
