Our division is one of the largest and most well known in North America, and indeed throughout the world. Established in 1963 under Dr. Robert Jeffs, considered to be one of the North American pioneers of Paediatric Urology, our Division has grown to serve well over 12,000 patients each year, performing between 1,500 and 2,000 procedures and operations per year – making our Division one of the busiest surgical specialities at SickKids.
World Leader in Research
The Division is a world leader in many key research areas including bench or basic science as well as clinical and translational research. Translational research allows us to bridge the relationship and provide continuity between scientific investigation and clinical care. Moreover, our research efforts are informed and inspired by the very challenges our young patients face every day. Read more about our specific areas of research on our Research Activities page.
Renowned International Training Program
Our division is dedicated to training the Paediatric Urologists who will continue excellent care for the next generation. As international surgical leaders in the field, our surgeons and our team are committed to educating the finest trainees, all accomplished adult and child urologists who come to us from all over North America and abroad to learn our unique and forward-thinking surgical and medical approaches to Paediatric Urology. Our training programs are highly sought after and we are proud to graduate a regular stream of gifted, new paediatric urology surgeons each year who enter practice worldwide. Read more about training on our Education and Training page.
The Paediatric Urology Division at SickKids often hosts observers from all corners of the globe, wishing to learn from leaders in our division. This creates a fertile learning atmosphere that continues to build relationships worldwide. Our faculty members are routinely invited to share their expertise and innovations at major international meetings and symposia and to teach surgery in less advanced countries. We also are asked to provide care at SickKids for extremely complex patients from other countries, via the generous support of the Herbie Fund. Many of our faculty volunteer their time to propagate knowledge to third world countries, where modern techniques and facilities are a challenge.
The Division of Urology is a multidisciplinary team consisting of a team of urologists, nurses, social workers, child life specialists and psychologists. Other services includes Telehealth, Interpreter Services and our own Playpark for children. The Paediatric Urology Division at SickKids is a renowned tertiary and quaternary referral centre for the most complex, congenital urological defects in children and a resource not only to Toronto but the rest of Canada and the world.
