Parking

Revenue from parking at SickKids contributes directly to enhancing care for our children and their families, and advancing our research endeavours.

SickKids Atrium parking garage

Parking is available under the hospital. The garage entrance is located on Elm Street. The lot is automated and accepts cash and credit cards. Parkers take a ticket upon entry and pay at one of the pay stations located in each of the P1 to P4 elevator lobbies when exiting.

Construction notice: SickKids is upgrading the P1 level of the Atrium parking garage. Construction will take place until March 2015. Please prepare for delays entering and exiting the Atrium parking garage (the main hospital garage with entrance off of Elm St.). During construction, families and visitors should give themselves extra time to park to ensure they are on time for appointments.

Dear Families,

Over the past few months, SickKids has introduced several changes to parking at the Hospital.

Support for families

SickKids understands that parking costs can be an additional financial burden for families caring for a child undergoing care at the Hospital, particularly patients requiring extended in-patient stays or frequent clinic visits. To help address unexpected and extraordinary expenses related to a child’s medical condition, SickKids can help families access funds through community funding sources. SickKids also maintains the Patient Amenities Fund.  Families with exceptional financial needs who do not have access to other funding help can speak to staff from their program to discuss their specific circumstances. The fund exists to help defray certain costs, one of which may be parking, associated with a course of treatment at SickKids. Families can approach a member of their health care team to apply for assistance from this fund.

Parking rates and savings opportunities

The Hospital undertook a comprehensive review of its parking-related policies including the rate structure for families and visitors, as well as staff.

The new family and visitor parking rates are comparable to parking rates in the local area around the Hospital as well as major health sciences centres in the Toronto area. In fact, the Hospital’s $20.00 maximum rate is the lowest rate among the identified peer group hospitals.

For parents here for continual periods, weekly, bi-weekly and monthly passes offer some price advantages and are available in the Parking Office.  The structure of the “family rate” has also changed, parents can now access this rate through the purchasing of repeat-visit parking packages that will enable families to benefit from a discounted rate structure should they need to return to SickKids on numerous, though not continual, days (e.g. 10 visits in a three-month period).

Parking revenue

Parking has always represented an important source of revenue to the Hospital. Parking revenues are used to fund the cost of operating and sustaining the Hospital’s parking infrastructure, to enhance care for our patients and families, and advance our research endeavours. In a period of constrained provincial government funding, SickKids is increasingly reliant on alternative sources of funding in order to ensure that the Hospital continues to provide comprehensive services to patients and families.

Necessary improvements to parking system

SickKids’ principal parking facility is a 900-stall, four-level underground structure attached to the main part of the Hospital. This structure was opened in 1992, as the Hospital’s Atrium wing opened. In December 2012, SickKids implemented a major change in the parking operating system transitioning from a cash-only, attendant-managed system to a modern, automated “self pay” platform. This significant project has improved operational efficiency as well as adding enhanced convenience to Hospital visitors and families. The Hospital has also commenced a major maintenance project for the surface of parking Level 1 which has degraded over the years, and similar maintenance will be required for the other three parking levels in coming years.

Staff parking

SickKids has also recently introduced changes to employee staff parking policies, including increased parking rates. Staff who wish to park at the Hospital can apply for a monthly parking pass or may chose to park on a daily basis. SickKids actively manages staff parking to ensure, to the greatest extent possible, that a parking stall is available to families and visitors when required.
