Supporting mothers to establish and maintain breast milk supply
Health-care professionals will learn how to help a mother establish and maintain a breast milk supply for a hospitalized baby by utilizing breast massage, the Ameda double electric pump and hand expression.
Kangaroo Care and the Hospitalized Infant
Health-care professionals will learn how to support families to provide Kangaroo Care to hospitalized infants. They will learn about Kangaroo Care, including modified forms for the infant who cannot be held, eligibility criteria for infants, how to prepare family members, and how to safely transfer ventilated and non-ventilated infants to and from the family member. Self-identification will determine either the ventilated or non-ventilated infant stream of the course.
Oral Immune Therapy and the Hospitalized Infant
Health-care professionals will learn about Oral Immune Therapy (OIT), including how it works to enhance the infant’s immunity, and its other benefits for infants and parents. They will also learn how to support families to provide OIT to hospitalized infants who cannot feed orally.
Breastfeeding Intake Assessment – Part 1
In Part 1 of this module, health-care professionals will learn how to assess an infant's intake at the breast. This will include signs of milk transfer, expected elimination patterns, how to assess the infant latch and how to recognize swallowing at the breast.
Breastfeeding Intake Assessment - Part 2
In this module, health-care professionals will learn how to use the BabyWeigh scale (and BabyWeigh II) to accurately assess breast milk intake at the breast.
