WELCOME TO THE NEW IBD ACADEMY!
IBD Academy is a website aimed at serving the families of the paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) population.
IBD is a group of disorders that cause parts of the gastrointestinal tract to become inflamed and ulcerated. An unusual response of the body's immune system plays a role in each of the two main forms of IBD; namely Crohn disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Until a cure is found for IBD, therapy is used for patients to become and remain symptom free (this is known as remission). Most people require ongoing medication; and sometimes surgery. Most often, these are lifelong diseases, usually starting in childhood in otherwise healthy, active individuals.
There are almost 201,000 Canadian's living with IBD. Out of these, almost 5,000 are children under 18 years old. Two-thirds of these children have Crohn disease, and one-third has ulcerative colitis.
With the growing number of early onset cases of IBD, our IBD Academy is intended to provide you with educational material and self-management tools. We also like to keep families abreast of current research, as well as news and events that may be of interest to you.
You are cordially invited...
