Medical directives at SickKids
Beginning with Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) in 1997, Medical Directive usage at SickKids has evolved to include 11 Regulated Health Professional Groups, providing timely patient care with safety at the forefront.
Currently there almost 400 medical directives in the system, about 300 of which are active. There are over 450 users from various professional groups in the hospital and over 300 responsible physicians.
Medical Directives are evaluated annually to assess issues such as: usage, safety and continuing education. There are few adverse events associated with medical directives. Of those reported, none highlighted directive content or processes as their issue. Furthermore, actions undertaken by the Regulated Health Professionals demonstrate directive adherence and competency to manage the outcome.
Medical Directives at Innovations Expo 2008
In April 2008, the Medical Directives Program at SickKids was selected to present at the 2008 Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo, under the theme of Improving Efficiency Through Process Redesign.
The Presentation “Optimizing Access. A Medical Directives System to Expand Scope of Practice” also featured a video. The video includes perspectives and some of the new types of roles that may use this type of process.
