What is Therapeutic Clowning?

Playing, laughing and making friends. That's what therapeutic clowns have been doing at SickKids since 1993.

Our therapeutic clowns use gentle play, humour, and therapeutic relationships to make the hospital a more fun and enjoyable place for patients and families. They create a safe space for emotional expression, empowerment, and social interaction. They are specially trained to adjust their approach according to the developmental, emotional, and physical needs and abilities of the child or youth with whom they are interacting.

The therapeutic clowns are paid professional members of the Creative Arts Therapy team. They collaborate with music and art therapists, Child Life specialists and other members of the health care team to develop patient care plans. Therapeutic clowns engage in ongoing professional development and supervision.
