Clinical Team

Caroline Bennett, RN, MN – Clinical Nurse Specialist ( MLOA)

Caroline Bennett completed her undergraduate nursing degree at University of Western Ontario. Caroline’s nursing career started at the Hospital for Sick Children on the Haematology/Oncology inpatient unit where she has worked for six years. Caroline completed her Masters in Clinical Nursing at the University of Toronto in 2014 and is currently on maternity leave in the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist with PACT. Emily Fulford, RN, MN-NP, (Peds), Clinical Nurse Specialist (covering MLOA until November 2017)

Emily completed her undergraduate biomedical science degree at the University of Guelph and then she fell in love with the role of a nurse practitioner. To attain this goal, she completed her undergraduate nursing degree at University of Toronto and followed that up with her Masters in Nursing, Nurse Practitioner (peds stream) program. She has been a bedside nurse at SickKids for eight years in neuroscience and trauma before taking on this role with PACT. Emily can be reached at: emily.fulford@sickkids.ca (416-813-6909. 

Lori Ives-Baine, RN, BscN, MN (CPB) - Grief Support Coordinator

Lori Ives-Baine has been a nurse at SickKids for 27 years, having completed her undergraduate degree in nursing at McMaster University and her Masters in Nursing and Bioethics at the University of Toronto. Clinically, Lori worked in the NICU for 23 years, as a staff nurse and then as the program Bereavement Coordinator (19 years). In 2013, Lori has joined PACT as one of the Grief Support Coordinators. Lori is also a teacher (George Brown, U of T and UOIT) and researcher (UOIT and York University) and is passionate about ensuring best practices in end-of-life care and bereavement. Lori values the support that can be provided to families and staff and looks for creative ways to continue that support.Lori's clinical areas to support include: Cardiac Critical Care, NICU, 4D and the 7th floor. Francis Macapagal, RN, BScN, MN - Clinical Nurse Specialist

Francis has been working with PACT for several years and is currently covering a leave, in the role of CNS. Francis graduated from his MN at University of Toronto and has worked in Haematology/Oncology (Bone Marrow Transplant) and in psychiatry in different roles. Kate Nelson- PACT Physician 

Kate Nelson is a staff pediatrician on the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT). Kate completed undergraduate degrees in English and chemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia and received her medical degree from Harvard. Following a general pediatrics residency at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she completed a fellowship in pediatric palliative care at Children's Hospital Boston. At SickKids, she is also a Janice Rotman Fellow in homecare innovation and an academic general paediatrics fellow, pursuing a PhD in clinical epidemiology at the University of Toronto looking at patient-centered outcomes for children with severe neurologic impairment. Christine Newman- PACT Physician

Christine Newman is a graduate of the University of Toronto school of Medicine. She completed her paediatric training at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, serving as chief resident in her final year. She then completed a two-year fellowship in Neonatology at the Hospital for Sick Children. During her training she served as president of both the Professional Association of Internes and Residents (PAIRO) and of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (CAIR). After completing her subspecialty training, Chris joined the Division of Neonatology at SickKids in 1989. Chris served as Clinical Director of the NICU from 1994 to 2000. After an academic leave spent studying palliative care, Chris joined the Palliative and Bereavement Care Service at SickKids in July 2003. In addition to her work at SickKids, Chris served as the first paediatric palliative care consultant to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care (TLCPC) at Mount Sinai Hospital from 2005 – 2008 providing home-based palliative care to children in the Greater Toronto Area. Adam Rapoport- PACT Physician and Medical Director

Adam Rapoport is a general pediatrician with a Masters in bioethics. His palliative care career began in 2009 when he joined the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital, as their pediatric consultant. In July 2011 Adam became the first Medical Director of the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) at SickKids. This service provides both inpatient and outpatient care to children with life-threatening illnesses, and their families. In 2013 Adam became Medical Director at Toronto’s first pediatric residential hospice – Emily’s House. Adam’s academic work focuses on the intersection of his 3 primary interests: paediatrics, palliative care and ethics. Adam can be reached at adam.rapoport@sickkids.ca (416) 813 6905 ex. 206905.

Norah Shaughnessy- Grief Support Coordinator

Norah Shaughnessy completed her Bachelor of Arts at Queen’s University in Kingston, and then went on to complete her Master’s of Social Work at Carleton University in Ottawa. Norah has completed internships at both the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. Norah worked at Camp Oochigeas for six years where she developed the full time in-hospital and in-city programs for children and their families in the oncology units. Norah joined PACT in 2013 as one of the Grief Support Coordinators.Norah's clinical areas include: Emergency, PICU, surgery and the hematology/oncology program. Kevin Weingarten- PACT Physician

Kevin Weingarten is a physician on the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) at The Hospital for Sick Children, in Toronto. After completing his residency in paediatrics, he went on to do fellowships in Paediatric Haematology/Oncology (at SickKids) and Paediatric Palliative Care (at Boston Children’s Hospital) Kevin is currently working on his Masters in Bioethics at the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto. Kim Widger- PACT Nursing Research Associate

Kimberley Widger is a Nursing Research Associate at The Hospital for Sick Children and Associate Professor at the the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. Kim worked with Dr. Bonnie Stevens for her post doctoral fellowship, which was focused on knowledge translation and end-of-life pain management for children. Kim’s doctoral research was a multi-centre study to develop and test an instrument to measure the quality of care provided to dying children and their families from the perspective of bereaved parents. Kim was previously a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Pediatric Palliative Care Service at the IWK Health Centre. Kim can be reached at kim.widger@sickkids.ca (416) 978-7925.

Rebecca Williams- Nurse Practitioner 

Rebecca Williams has been a Nurse Practitioner on the Paediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT) since 2012 after completing her combined Masters in Nursing and Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at the University of Toronto. Prior to that she worked as a registered nurse on the Haematology/Oncology in-patient unit at the Hospital for Sick Children on the Haematology/Oncology in-patient unit for six years. Rebecca’s current role is as the PACT outreach Nurse Practitioner, a role joint role between SickKids, CCAC and Sick Kids focused on supporting end-of-life care in the community.
