Mental Health Access Program (MHAP)
MHAP is made up of a team of intake specialists and senior clinicians who will review and triage referrals to determine if the services provided through the Department of Psychiatry are the best option for the child and their family. They will monitor and maintain all referrals to Psychiatry to ensure that cases are served in the best way and place possible.
In cases where a referral is deemed not appropriate for service at SickKids, the MHAP team will provide families and referring physicians with alternative service options that may be more suitable.
The MHAP Team will triage all inpatient and outpatient referrals for access to psychiatry services including the emergency department and Urgent Care Clinic.
The SickKids’ Department of Psychiatry has mental health patient navigators to help patients, families and health providers better navigate the mental health system. Case navigators are often the first and ongoing point of contact for patients and families and they navigate and act as a liaison on a systems level with partnering hospitals, clinics, physicians, case managers and community agencies.
If you have immediate concerns about your child’s mental health please go to your closest emergency medical service.
Please see Immediate Mental Health Services for more information on services that can be called or accessed for urgent mental health concerns.
