The SickKids Department of Psychiatry treats patients with complex mental health conditions through the Psychiatry Follow-Up Clinic (PFC)and/or psychotherapy programs.
Psychiatry Follow-Up Clinic (PFC):
The PFC provides psychiatric treatment and monitoring for children and adolescents with complex diagnoses, including various forms of anxiety, mood disorders, tic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and ADHD. Treatment in the PFC may involve the initiation or adjustment of medication, as the supervising staff have expertise in child psychopharmacology. Appointments in the PFC are typically scheduled every one to three months depending on the needs of the child and family. Once the challenges of the child or adolescent have been stabilized, care is transferred back to the family’s primary care physician for ongoing monitoring closer to home.
The psychotherapy programs provide both group and individual therapies – including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Supportive Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy.
This is a physician-based referral program.
If you have immediate concerns about your child’s mental health please go to your closest emergency medical service.
