Eric Bouffet elected President of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology

Dr. Eric Bouffet, Director of the Paediatric Neuro-Oncology Program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), has been elected President of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP).

As President, Bouffet will lead more than 1,000 scientists, doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals that make up SIOP’s membership in increasing SIOP’s knowledge about all aspects of childhood cancer and achieving its goal to improve and optimize treatments for paediatric oncology patients across the globe.

Bouffet has been actively involved in the field of paediatric oncology for more than 35 years. Before coming to SickKids, he trained and practiced in Europe at the Centre Leon Berard in Lyon, France and The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, U.K. In addition to his clinical duties, Bouffet is a Senior Associate Scientist in the Research Institute at SickKids and Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on novel treatments and clinical trials in children with brain tumours, and he has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters in the field of neuro-oncology. Since becoming a member of SIOP in 1993, Bouffet has held several roles, including Chairman of the SIOP Brain Tumour Committee. His term as President will begin after the 2015 SIOP Congress in Cape Town, South Africa in October.
“SIOP has given me more than I could ever describe,” says Bouffet. “My wish today is simply to give back, and to contribute to the consolidation of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology as the voice of those who fight against childhood cancer around the world.”
