Annual grants made by SickKids Foundation to SickKids are the largest investments in children’s health care in Canada and the largest annual contributions to a hospital in the country. This success is a result of the dedication and commitment of volunteers and the continued support from thousands of individuals and corporations. Community support, separate and distinct from government and granting agencies, is a critical source of funding for SickKids. In the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2010, SickKids Foundation invested $52.5 million in child health research, education and care, including $47.9 million for highest priorities at SickKids. Despite a difficult economic year, the Foundation saw a 41.6 per cent increase in the value of its endowment fund to an all-time high of $584.8 million as of March 31, 2010. The fund provides long-term, stable funding for projects and programs. Thanks to gains on investments, this performance has placed SickKids Foundation among the best performing foundation endowments in North America. The Foundation and SickKids have launched a $200-million fundraising campaign to build a Research & Learning Tower. This world-class facility will bring together more than 2,000 scientists and staff who work at the Research Institute and are currently spread out over six locations. Established in 1972, SickKids Foundation is driven by the belief that improving the health and well-being of children is one of the most powerful ways to improve society.
