How to apply for a volunteer opportunity

Thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities at The Hospital for Sick Children. To help guide you through the application process please refer to the steps below.

STEP ONE: Complete and Send Volunteer Application

Once you have reviewed the Volunteer Opportunities section, have selected the opportunity of interest, and you meet all requirements, please follow the instructions listed in the posting for next steps.

Application forms can be signed at the interview. Your email must quote the Job Title and File Number associated with the position (in the subject line) in order to be considered. Unsolicited applications and resumes submitted to our attention will not be kept on file. Only applications submitted through the email address specified in the posting will be considered. Please note that documents must be sent in PDF or Word format only. General inquiries sent to this email address will not be answered.

We thank you in advance for your interest. Please be advised that only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted. Successful completion of the application process and participation in an interview will not guarantee a volunteer placement within SickKids through the Volunteer Resources department.


STEP TWO: Interview

If you are selected for an interview, you will receive the necessary documentation required to complete the following:

  • Criminal Record Check(clearance standards must be met)

If you are 18 years of age or older you will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check. You will be required to bring to the interview, a valid Government issued photo ID (e.g. current driver’s license, current passport, citizenship card or permanent residence card) AND a secondary piece of ID to verify your name (e.g. SIN card, Health card, Student card).

Please note: A small processing fee will be applied at the expense of the applicant. We do not accept previously completed police checks, nor do we accept police checks initiated by the applicant.

  • Employment Reference Check(3 Canadian references are required)

Employment and/or volunteer references are preferred. If you do not have three employment or volunteer references, you can use teachers, coaches, community leaders or other professional references in lieu. Please ensure you have accurate and current contact information for your references and notify them in advance to ensure their availability and that someone will be contacting them on behalf of SickKids.

  • Vulnerable Sector Search

If you are 23 years of age or older you will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Search

  • Occupational Health Requirements (Once selected for an interview, please begin this process)

Compliance with Hospital Staff Immunization and Surveillance Policy
For the health and safety of patients and staff, and in compliance with the Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols for Ontario Hospitals, and the policies of The Hospital for Sick Children, your volunteer placement is conditional upon you providing Medical documentation confirming the following:

a) Tuberculosis (TB) 2-step skin test showing completed results:
You must provide a documented 2-step TB skin test showing completed results. Please refer to the Staff Immunization & Surveillance Policy Healthcare Provider Certification Non-Payroll Staff. Please note that it can take up to two weeks to complete a 2-step TB skin test; and

b) Immunization status:
You must provide satisfactory documentation of immunity to rubella, measles, mumps and chickenpox as well as your Hepatitis B immune status. Please refer to the link above. This form must be completed by a physician. You are required to bring this completed documentation to your volunteer interview.

This information is kept confidential within the hospital. Please note: Any costs associated with the completion of the form and/or collecting the information will be the sole responsibility of the applicant.


STEP THREE: Orientation

Once all the requirements listed above are successfully completed a mandatory orientation session is required in order to start your volunteer placement. Placement specific training will also be provided.
