Systematic Measurement

Leading the nation in the systematic measurement of outcomes for children’s mental health – championing evidence-based practice and system change

Over 100,000 children receive mental health treatment in Ontario in any given year, a figure that represents about one-fifth of the children who are likely in need of such services. How effective are the interventions provided and what proportion of children improve as a result?

Drs. Melanie Barwick and Bruce Ferguson have partnered with several children’s mental health organizations and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to implement a province-wide measurement tool to provide outcome information for children aged six to 17 years of age who receive mental health treatment.

As Ontario is the first province in Canada to undertake such a large and systemic program of outcome evaluation for children’s mental health, this initiative promises to improve mental health service for children and to discover which mental health interventions will prove to be the most successful for different kinds of children. www.cafasinontario.ca
