Molecular Genetics Laboratory
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory is quickly moving to more highly complex technology. For example, the laboratory has moved away from the time consuming linkage analysis and Southern blotting based tests toward PCR-based direct mutational analysis (e.g. neoplastic transformations, CF). As well, the lab has introduced multiplexed-PCR and automated, fluorescent fragment analysis (e.g. DMD) and is using automated sequencing of disease genes to find mutations not detectable by any other method (e.g. Fabry).
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory at SickKids has earned a national and international reputation for excellence in the molecular diagnosis of genetic disease and cancer and continues to be a major growth area in laboratory medicine.
