Mandatory research ethics training for all clinical researchers: completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2) on-line tutorial: www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/eng/education/tutorial-didacticiel/.

On December 7, 2010 an updated Tri-Council Policy Statement – Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) was released.  By way of the Memorandum of Understanding with the three funding councils, The Hospital for Sick Children is required to ensure that all research involving human participants complies with these current standards and that current research personnel have up-to-date training.

The training tutorial is now available and all research staff must be certified to the current set of standards. Completion of the tutorial must be confirmed for all research team members who have contact with research subjects or access to identifying personal health information including investigators, research coordinators, research assistants, staff members, volunteers and students. It is the responsibility of the primary investigator to ensure that their research team members complete the on-line tutorial.

The TCPS 2 on-line tutorial consists of eight modules which include case study examples in audio, video and text. The tutorial has log-on and log-off capability so that it can be completed over time. At the completion of the tutorial a printable certificate is generated.

The on-line tutorial training account should be set up to ensure that the exact name and spelling of the individual’s SickKids email address is used if possible.  When creating credentials for the course (user name, e-mail address) there is also the possibility of associating with an institution.  Selecting this option by using a SickKids e-mail address and selecting The Hospital for Sick Children as the institution will automatically forward a list of individuals that have completed the training to the SickKids REB by a weekly update.   It is encouraged that each individual keep a copy of the certificate of completion of the TCPS 2: Core training for their records.

If you do not have a SickKids email address to associate yourself with The Hospital for Sick Children for this purpose, your name will not be added to this list and you should submit a hard copy of the TCPS 2 Core Training completion certificate to the REB office.
