Dentistry

The Department of Dentistry is fully affiliated with the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. In addition, the Department is linked by both management and clinical appointments with the Bloorview Kids Rehab, a rehabilitation hospital located approximately eight kilometers from The Hospital for Sick Children.

The Department is the largest in Canada, was the first hospital dental clinic in North America to be registered to the ISO 9001:2000 quality standard and is the site of postgraduate training in Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The department and the dental resident / fellow training programs are accredited by the Council of Dental Accreditation of Canada. The Department of Dentistry has three major Divisions, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dental Research and sections in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics. The combined dental clinics log over 15,000 patient visits and over 2,100 dental operations under general anesthesia annually.

The Departments of Dentistry of The Hospital for Sick Children and Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Centre are the only designated centres in the Greater Toronto Area for administration of the Government of Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Cleft Lip and Palate/Craniofacial Dental Program. Both sites have interdisciplinary assessment/treatment teams and patient care is fully integrated and rationalized.

Since this is a specialist hospital, all patients must be referred in writing, by a dentist, physician or surgeon. Dental emergency management is provided 24/7 and the clinics operate by appointment only. The full range of specialist treatment is provided as well as innovative procedures that are under the guidance of clinical outcome research protocols.

Dental research is clustered within five categories. The categories are: craniofacial anomalies, feeding disorders, dental trauma, dentoalveolar implants and prosthetics and clinical practice (specialty-related). All staff hold university appointments and most are involved in active research projects. Continuing education courses are available for booking through this website.
