Clinical Significance

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, including increased blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Key features of metabolic syndrome include insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dislipidemia and central obesity - all of which are risk factors for artherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and even premature death. Several gut hormones or peptide hormones have been identified and play a significant role in the regulation of gut motility and secretion, pancreatic islet hormone secretion, food intake, energy expenditure and taking part in both neurotransmission and neuromodulation.
