Fellowship training program

There are several sections within the division:

  • Inpatient Paediatric Medicine
  • Outpatient Paediatric Consultation
  • Paediatric Dermatology
  • Community Paediatrics
  • Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect

The division has a strong educational program and patient-based research program (Paediatric Outcomes Research Team).

The Division offers several different fellowships:

  1. Academic General Paediatric (AGP) Fellowship - this is a 24-month academic fellowship intended for individuals who have completed four years of paediatrics, are FRCPC qualified (equivalent or eligible), and are preparing for a career in academic general paediatrics. The individual will develop academic skills, either in patient-based research, or medical education under the supervision of the faculty of the division. Individuals will enrolled in a graduate program in Clinical Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Health Administration, or higher education, and will undertake and complete an independent research project.
  2. The fellowship is not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; however, the curriculum goals and objectives recommended by the Academic Pediatric Association will be used to develop an individualized educational plan for each AGP fellow (Baldwin C et al. Ambulatory Pediatrics, 2007). Each fellow will be assigned a faculty supervisor appropriate for their stream of training. A commitment to clinical activity will be limited to 20 per cent of overall activity. The in-hospital on-call commitment will be 1:8 maximum (46 calls per year).
  3. Clinical Fellowship, General Paediatrics - this is a 12-month clinical fellowship intended for individuals who have completed a minimum of three years of paediatrics and are preparing for a career in Clinical Paediatric practice. The fellow will rotate through the following clinical settings: inpatient pediatric medicine (five to six months), suspected child abuse and neglect team (one to two months), community and ambulatory paediatrics (one to two months), clinical elective approved by fellowship director (two months), and academic/research (two months). The fellowship is not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Each fellow will be assigned a faculty supervisor. The in-hospital on-call commitment will be 1:4 maximum (77 calls per year).
  4. Paediatric Dermatology Fellowship - this is a 12 to 24-month clinical fellowship intended for those who have completed a full paediatric residency prior to entering the fellowship program. The candidate will be FRPCP (or equivalent) qualified or eligible at time of entry and will be seeking a career in paediatrics with a special interest in paediatric dermatology. The individual will develop extensive skills in the diagnosis and management of common and rare paediatric dermatoses. There are weekly general dermatology clinics, as well as subspecialty clinics, and the fellow will have opportunities to participate in all. There is also up to 1.5 days per week of teaching through our section and the Department of Dermatology at the University of Toronto which enhances the clinical program. The fellow will develop and complete a major academic project under supervision. The fellow will participate in teaching rounds and all academic programs linked with the section of dermatology. The fellowship is not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, but an extensive curriculum with goals and objectives has been developed and serves as the template for the program. Fellows are strongly encouraged to consider a two-year program as this will enhance the ability for the individual to ultimately practice in an independent fashion. However, 12-month training programs can be considered. On-call commitments on the general paediatric wards are generally part of the program (dependant on funding source).
  5. Application process varies depending on whether your residency training is in dermatology or paediatrics. View more information on the fellowship including application criteria and guidelines for Adult Dermatologists, Dermatology residents, funding sources and deadlines, Paediatricians interested in this fellowship should direct their inquiries and application to Donna whitely as noted below.
  6. Community Paediatric Fellowship - this is a 24-month fellowship intended for individuals who have completed three years of paediatrics, and are preparing for a career in consulting and hospital-based paediatrics in a community setting. The goal of this fellowship is to develop the clinical skill set and the academic skill set that would prepare the individual for a leadership position in a community hospital. The individual will re-enforce and further refine their acute care perinatal / neonatal skills and their skills in general paediatric outpatient consulting, with an emphasis on child development, school problems and behaviour problems. In addition basic research, teaching and/or leadership training will be individualized. The fellowship is not accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Each fellow will be assigned a faculty supervisor. The in-hospital on-call commitment in the PGY4 years will be similar to PGY4 requirements in the core program and the commitment for the PGY5 year will be approximately once per week.
