Fellowship Program

Fellowship Program Overview

The Fellowship Program with The Labatt Family Heart Centre – Division of Cardiology at The Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto offers Paediatric Cardiology and Subspecialty Fellowships.

The three year comprehensive training program provides an educational opportunity in a clinical, research and theoretical setting and is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Core clinical fellows are involved in clinical rotations based on the requirements set out by the Royal College and trainees will participate in research during their second year. In this program, the trainee regularly meets with committee members and the Program Director to review progress and to provide mentorship regarding elective rotations and career counseling.

Upon completion of the three year core fellowship training program, trainees are eligible to participate in a one year subspecialty program.

The Hospital for Sick Children offers Paediatric Cardiology Subspecialties in the following areas:

  • Cardiac MRI
  • Echocardiography
  • Electrophysiology
  • Fetal Echocardiography
  • Interventional Catheterization
  • Transplant and Heart Function

Eligibility:

  • You must be a paediatrician to be eligible for this program
  • Canadians, North Americans and international trainees

Upon completion of the program:

  • Only Canadians will be eligible to write the Royal College Certification Exam
  • All other trainees will receive a certificate upon completion of the program

Funding:

There are two types of funding possible for Clinical Fellowship:

  1. The Hospital for Sick Children Payroll: These positions are fully funded by the Fellowship Program.
  2. Externally Funded: These positions may be funded by an outside institution or scholarship. There is a strict requirement with respect to the minimum salary required. A funding confirmation letter must be provided by an institution or scholarship.

Application process:

The academic year starts on July 1 and ends on June 30. Trainees are expected to start on July 1 and all requirements must be in place prior to the start date.

Applications should include the following documents:

  • A completed online Fellowship Application Form
  • An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (please include date of birth, home address, country of birth)
  • Three reference letters including one from your current Program Director
  • A letter of intent
  • Medical Degree (English translation if required)
  • Paediatrics Subspecialty Certificate (English translation if required)

Deadlines:

Core Fellowship - applications will be accepted up to December 31, 2019 for the academic year commencing July 1, 2021.

Subspecialty Fellowships – applications will be accepted up to January 31, 2020 for the academic year commencing July 1, 2021.

Research Fellowship Program Overview

The Labatt Family Heart Centre offers one to two year funded research fellowships.  The goal is to foster paediatric cardiology research amongst trainees developing a career in the field of paediatric cardiology.  

Training Opportunities

Eligibility:

Candidates must possess an MD or PhD (or equivalent degree in a cardiac related field) and must be within 5 years from completion of their degree.

Research Fellowships:

There are four types of funding available for Research Fellows:

  1. Principal Investigator’s Funds:  These positions are fully funded by research grants.
  2. Labatt Family Heart Centre:  Partial funding from SickKids Foundation.  Applications for this funding are due July 31 of each year.
  3. Externally Funded:  Positions may be funded by an institution or scholarship.  There is a strict requirement with respect to the minimum salary required.  Funding letter must be provided by institution or scholarship.
  4. Unfunded:  These positions are funded from the trainees own funds.  Unfunded fellowships must be reviewed and approved by the Department of Paediatrics Medical Education Advisory Committee (MEAC) prior to Departmental and Postgraduate approval of the trainee’s application in the Research Fellowship Program.

Application process:

Candidates must identify a supervisor with expertise in cardiology research at SickKids at the time of application.

November 30: Start date of May 1 the following year

May 30: Start date of November 1 the same year
