Fellowship Program Overview

The Cardiology Fellowship Program at SickKids offers Paediatric Cardiology and Subspecialty Fellowships.

The three year comprehensive training program provides an educational opportunity in a clinical, research and theoretical setting and is accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). Core clinical fellows are involved in clinical rotations based on the requirements set out by the Royal College and trainees will participate in research during their second year. In this program, the trainee regularly meets with committee members and the Program Director to review progress and to provide mentorship regarding elective rotations and career counseling.

Once you have completed the three year core fellowship training program you will be eligible to participate in a one year subspecialty program.

At SickKids, we offer Cardiology Subspecialties in the following areas:

  • Echocardiography
  • Fetal Echocardiography
  • Electrophysiology
  • Interventional catheterization
  • Transplant and Heart Function
  • Cardiac MRI

Eligibility

  • You must be a Paediatrician to be eligible for this program
  • Canadians, North Americans and International trainees

Upon completion of the Program

  • Only Canadians will be eligible to write the Royal College Certification Exam
  • All other trainees will receive a certificate upon completion of the program

Funding

There are two types of funding possible for Clinical Fellowship:

  1. The Hospital for Sick Children Payroll: These positions are fully funded by our program
  2. Externally Funded: Positions may be funded by an outside institution or scholarship. There is a strict requirement around the minimum salary required. A funding letter must be provided by institution or scholarship.

Application Process

The academic year starts on July 1 and ends on June 30. Trainees are expected to start on July 1 and all requirements must be in place prior to your start date.

Deadlines

For CORE Fellowship - applications will be accepted up to December 31, 2017 for academic year starting on July 1, 2019.

For Subspecialty Fellowships – applications will be accepted up to January 31, 2018 for academic year starting on July 1, 2019.

Observership Program Overview

Overview

The Observership Program in Paediatric Cardiology is open to any graduate of an international medical school, who is also board eligible or certified in Paediatrics or Paediatric Cardiology, and not licensed for practice in Canada. The candidate is requesting a period of time at SickKids in order to gain experience

Observers shall not have any patient care responsibilities and shall not begin a term without prior notice to the Medical Affairs Office or approval by the MAC, as appropriate. Observers will not participate in any direct patient contact and therefore, do not require an Independent or Educational license from the CPSO.

Eligibility

  • International trainees
  • You must be board eligible or certified in Paediatrics or Paediatric Cardiology
  • Students/Medical Students/other physicians without substantial Cardiology experience will not be accepted.

Cost

A non-refundable observer application fee of $175 is applicable to observers (> 2 days).

Deadlines

Observerships applications will be accepted up to one month prior to an agreed upon start date.

Elective Program Overview

Overview

The Elective Program for Cardiology at SickKids and University of Toronto is open to medical students, paediatric residents and paediatric cardiology residents/fellows. Paediatric cardiology residents/fellows must be in a North American program. International fellows will not be licensed by the Ontario licensing board (CPSO).

Medical Students

Medical Students requesting an elective at SickKids must go through the University of Toronto (UofT) electives Office.

Applications for consideration are accepted early August for January – March elective and early November for April – June elective. Electives are available for a maximum of FOUR (4) WEEKS in one academic year. There are no exceptions to this maximum duration.

All elective applications are processed and must be approved by the Elective Office, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
 

Paediatric Residents

Paediatric Residents requesting an elective must forward preferences regarding start and end dates to heartcentrecardiology.medicaleducation@sickkids.ca.

Once your elective has been confirmed, you may apply to the online application system.

Paediatric Cardiology Residents/Fellows

Paediatric Cardiology Residents/Fellows requesting an elective must request permission from Dr. Jennifer Russell, Subspecialty Program Director. This email should include your preferences regarding start and end dates and a letter from your Program Director approving your elective to heartcentrecardiology.medicaleducation@sickkids.ca.

Research Fellowship Program Overview

The Labatt Family Heart Centre offers 1 to 2 year research fellowships.  The goal is to foster cardiology research amongst trainees developing a career in the field of Cardiology.  

Eligibility

Candidates must possess an MD or PhD (or equivalent degree in a cardiac related field) and must be within 5 years from completion of their degree.
 

Funding

There are four types of funding available for Research Fellows:

1. Principal Investigator’s Funds:  These positions are fully funded by research grants.
 

2. Externally Funded:  Positions may be funded by an institution or scholarship.  There is a strict requirement around the minimum salary required.  Funding letter must be provided by institution or scholarship.
 

3. Unfunded:  These positions are funded from the trainees own funds.  Unfunded fellowships must be reviewed and approved by the Department of Paediatrics Medical Education Advisory Committee (MEAC) prior to Departmental and Postgraduate approval of the trainee’s application in the Research Fellowship Program.
 

4. Labatt Family Heart Centre:  Partial funding from SickKids Foundation.  Applications for this funding are due July 31 of each year.

Candidates must identify a Supervisor  with expertise in cardiology research at SickKids at the time of application.
