Labatt Family Heart Centre

The Echocardiography Laboratory in The Labatt Family Heart Center provides diagnostic cardiac ultrasound for children with suspected or known heart disease. We evaluate patients ranging from the fetus to adolescents and young adults up to 18 years of age. Our laboratory provides high quality diagnostic services using the most advanced high-end diagnostic equipment and the tests are performed by highly skilled pediatric sonographers and interpreted by a world-class team of diagnostic physicians. The transthoracic echocardiography service specializes in the recognition of structural heart defects and uses the most advanced echocardiographic equipment for the analysis and evaluation of cardiac function. This includes three-dimensional echocardiography, tissue Doppler and myocardial strain imaging. Studies are performed according to well-defined imaging protocols and the highest quality control.  We introduced the innovative concept of functional paediatric echocardiography which uses specialized equipment for the analysis of cardiac function. We also provide stress echocardiography and perform either dobutamine stress echocardiography or supine bicycle echocardiography.  This allows scanning children during exercise that provides extra diagnostic information in certain diseases. Apart from the regular laboratory, our laboratory includes the Fetal Cardiac Program which provides diagnostic testing and multidisciplinary counseling to fetuses with suspected or known heart disease. This program also provides fetal treatment and intervention for certain fetal abnormalities or diseases.

The Echocardiography Laboratory also has a very active research program which develops and explores the clinical utility of newer echocardiographic techniques for the diagnosis and management of pediatric cardiovascular disease.

Our laboratory is also dedicated to teaching and training both physicians and sonographers. We have a structured hand-on training program for physicians and sonographers and also offer the opportunity for observers from all over the world to see our laboratory in action. Our structured approach to imaging aims at learning our imaging protocols and image optimization approach.

Who we are

The Echocardiography Laboratory is a team of physicians, sonographers , nurses and administrative staff. The team is headed by Dr. Luc Mertens who is the Section Head Echocardiography. Dr. Fraser Golding is Operational Director; Dr. Edgar Jaeggi is Head of the Fetal Cardiac Program. Lauren Duff is the Clinical Manager and the interim team lead for the sonographer group is Carlos Barrios.

The Echocardiography Research Laboratory

The Echocardiography Research Laboratory offers a unique environment for cardiovascular imaging research. Our research focuses on the development and clinical application of new echocardiographic and vascular ultrasound techniques. We have a fully equipped research ultrasound facility for functional echocardiography, three-dimensional echocardiography, exercise echocardiography, fetal echocardiography and vascular ultrasound. We also perform animal experiments including small animal imaging. We also have close collaborations with the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging group and perform joint research on different topics. We offer opportunities for research fellowships and research training to trainees interested in pediatric cardiovascular imaging.
