Training opportunities

SickKids is committed to teaching the next generation of health-care providers in Canada. In this section, you can find information about current training opportunities at SickKids.

SickKids Emergency Assistants for Research in Child Health (SEARCH) Program:

Volunteers for the SEARCH Program at SickKids function as trainee research assistants. Volunteers will be trained to help screen and enroll eligible patients into multiple clinical research studies that are currently recruiting in the Emergency Department.

The specific goals of this initiative are to provide a constant research presence in the Emergency Department, to improve recruitment rates for ongoing studies, and to educate and mentor future research and/or health care professionals.

The observer process:

An observer is an individual who has requested a period of time at SickKids in order to gain experience. This individual is usually a graduate of an international medical school who is not licensed for practice in Canada. Physicians wishing to gain observer status must apply directly to the department/division they wish to observe. Final approval is granted by the department head and the Medical Advisory Committee if the applicant meets the necessary requirements.
