About the Clinic

The Lupus Clinic, the largest paediatric lupus clinic in North America, works to optimize the future health of children with lupus. In doing so, we provide care to treat the disease and to prevent long-term complications. The divisions of Rheumatology, Nephrology and Adolescent Medicine come together in one location to provide a comprehensive care clinic for our children and families. This comprehensive model has become the standard for both paediatric and adult lupus clinics around North America.

Pre-appointment Instructions

What to bring:

  • Immunization record
  • Clothing for your child to wear to allow for a full physical exam (T-shirt/tank top and shorts).

Important pre-appointment instructions:

If there are any special pre-appointment instructions you will be contacted by clinic staff prior to your visit and provided with full details.

Directions:

The Rheumatology Clinic is found in Clinic 9. The waiting and registration area is in the Burton Wing in Room M100.

From the University Avenue entrance, walk right, down the hallway and turn down the first hallway on your left. We are the first clinic you will find on the right side of the hall..

From the Elizabeth Street entrance and parking garage elevators, walk west along Main Street towards Shoppers Drug Mart. At the Family Centre turn left. At the end of this hallway you will find our registration and waiting area in front of you.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Appointments generally last at least 1 to 3 hours and while we do our best to be as efficient as possible, sometimes the waiting time is beyond our control. A blood test and urine test is collected at the beginning of every visit.

Each visit will include an assessment by a registered nurse, a rheumatology resident or fellow and a staff rheumatologist or staff nephrologist. In addition, an Adolescent Medicine specialist meets with everyone 13 years of age and older to address adolescent specific problems.

If necessary, other services such as Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy, Clinical Dietitians and Social Work may need to be involved. Every effort is made to coordinate tests and other appointments with the Lupus Clinic visit.

Each team member plays a critical role in patient assessment, education, support and follow-up.
