Background and clinical significance

Anti-cardiolipin (aCL) antibodies belong to a heterogeneous family of antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies, which are autoantibodies directed against anionic phospholipids or protein-phospholipid complexes. Persistently elevated levels of aPL antibodies are associated with an increased risk for vascular thrombosis and obstetrical complications.
