Building the future of paediatric education globally

At the Learning Institute, our commitment to developing the next generation of paediatric professionals—locally and globally—is at the heart of everything we do. Through interprofessional training and international collaboration, we’re shaping a stronger, more connected paediatric workforce.

One standout initiative is our partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM). What began in 2020 as a virtual response to pandemic disruptions has evolved into a lasting and impactful collaboration. The SickKids Virtual Elective Program in Paediatrics introduces medical students abroad to child health and the Canadian healthcare system, covering primary care, community paediatrics and specialist care.

In 2024, this collaboration reached a milestone: SJTUSM formally integrated the program into its paediatric curriculum, where students now receive academic credit for their participation. This reflects the program’s rigour and SickKids’ leadership in global medical education.

By blending paediatric expertise with innovative virtual learning, we’ve created more than a program—we’ve built a legacy. Our work ensures future medical professionals are equipped to meet paediatric and mental health challenges across borders.
