The Empower™ Reading and Learning Group: Digital transformation for literacy

The SickKids Empower™ Reading and Learning Group, in partnership with the Digital Learning Services (DLS) team, recently launched a re-designed website to better support educators and improve literacy outcomes for children. The collaboration was thoughtful and creative, with the DLS team offering guidance on everything from the big-picture structure to the smallest design details. The new site offers an intuitive, streamlined experience, making it easier for educators to find materials, access videos and auto-generate certificates. Built for growth, the portal enables the Empower™ team to manage updates independently and adapt to future needs.

Since its August 2024 re-launch, more than 3,900 educators have used the platform, reporting greater confidence and efficiency in their teaching practices. The website’s user-friendly design and enhanced features ensure ongoing support for literacy education and health equity, benefiting educators and students alike.

"With the new portal, I can easily direct new teachers very specifically to where they will find what they need. New teachers don't always have time, especially in their first year, to explore the portal. However, my experienced teachers actually take a little time to navigate and find all the content that we've told them is there, and they tell me how helpful the portal is!"
