SickKids ranks among Canada’s top research hospitals
Summary:
For the 15th year in a row, SickKids has been named one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, ranking first in hospital intensity.
The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has once again been recognized as a national leader in health research, ranking first in hospital intensity and second overall on Research Infosource’s 2025 list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals.
Hospital intensity, measured by the proportion of total hospital spending accounted for by research, underscores our commitment to advancing and integrating research into clinical care in support of Precision Child Health. SickKids also placed second in total hospital research spending and third in researcher intensity (spending per researcher). This marks the 15th consecutive year that SickKids has held top positions.
"SickKids’ consistent ranking year over year reflects the breadth of our child health research and the exceptional expertise and dedication of our research community," says Dr. Stephen Scherer, Chief of Research at SickKids. "We’re proud to be an institution where science is deeply valued, where bold ideas and talent are nurtured, and where transformative collaborations thrive. Together, we are shaping the future of paediatric medicine and reinforcing Canada’s position as a global leader in health research."
As Canada’s largest, hospital-based child health research institute, SickKids Research Institute is home to over 3,000 researchers, staff and trainees across seven research programs. From fundamental science to translational research, our teams work to improve child health outcomes, inform policy and clinical care, train the next generation of researchers, and support global scientific communities through knowledge-sharing and state-of-the-art facilities.
