Osama Abdin
Hospital Positions
Osama Abdin received his B.Sc. in Computer Science and Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto in 2019. He subsequently completed his PhD in the laboratory of Dr. Philip Kim in 2024, where he focused on the development of deep learning tools for the modeling and design of peptides. After completing his PhD, he joined the Biomolecular Emulator team at Microsoft Research, AI for science, as a postdoctoral researcher. There, he worked on the development of a deep learning method for modeling protein structural ensembles under the leadership of Dr. Frank Noé. Dr. Abdin joined the Molecular Medicine Program at SickKids as a Scientist in May 2025.
Research
Dr Abdin's lab works on the development of deep learning methods to model and design biomolecules, with a focus on protein and peptide-based agents. Method development is primarily done through the lens of dynamics. Fundamentally, biomolecular function is determined by the propensity of a biomolecule to assume different structural conformations, and the properties of these different conformations. The developed methods integrate information about the dynamics of molecules to enable characterization of their function, and seek to modulate their dynamics to enable the design of new functions. The long term goal of the research program is to enable the rapid engineering of proteins and peptides in silico with a high degree of control over their functional properties.
