Biography

Dr. Michael Thai Binh Nguyen MD, FRCSC is a staff ophthalmologist at SickKids specializing in strabismus, binocular vision, and amblyopia. He is cross-appointed at the Kensington Eye Institute and Humber River Hospital where he also specializes in adult strabismus surgery and adult cataract surgery.

Dr. Nguyen obtained his medical degree from McMaster University. He completed ophthalmology residency training at the University of Toronto where he served as Chief Resident and President of the Council of Canadian Ophthalmology Residents. He graduated residency with the award for the resident with the highest academic standing and performed in the 99th percentile in North America for the Ophthalmology Knowledge Assessment Program examination. He then went on to complete a fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. His primary research interest is in innovative techniques in strabismus surgery including botulinum toxin and adjustable sutures.

Dr. Nguyen is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto’s Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences where he is the Ophthalmology Residency Site Director of the Kensington Eye Institute and the Associate Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in Ophthalmology for the University of Toronto.

Dr. Nguyen has won numerous teaching awards including the prestigious PARO Trust Fund Resident Teaching Award. Dr. Nguyen’s research interests are in medical education, pediatric ophthalmology, and strabismus. He has presented multiple podium presentations at international conferences including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) meeting, and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) meeting where he won the 2024 AAPOS Fellowship Research Award for best research presentation.
