Summary:

SickKids is pleased to be among the Top 200 Healthcare Institutions in this year’s Nature Index 2019 Biomedical Sciences. SickKids ranked number 27 of health-care institutions globally.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is pleased to be among the Top 200 Healthcare Institutions in this year’s Nature Index 2019 Biomedical Sciences. SickKids ranked number 27 of health-care institutions globally. This ranking placed SickKids as the top Canadian health-care institution on the list and fourth among all children’s hospitals. It is also the top publicly-funded children’s hospital on the list.

The annual Nature Index tables were released in a supplement in the May 16 issue of Nature. According to Nature, "The biomedical sciences have helped global average life expectancy rise by 20 years since 1960. This supplement highlights scientists and institutions prominent in the ongoing research effort that will further transform our ideals of a healthy human life in the coming decades."

Each year, the Nature Index publishes tables based on the number of high-quality research outputs from each of health-care institutions, academic institutions, government institutions, corporate institutions and non-government organizations. The 2019 tables are based on Nature Index data from 2015 to 2018.

"SickKids places a high value on research and, as such, we work hard to support the kinds of collaborations and innovations that will ensure excellence in our research outputs," says Dr. Michael Salter, Chief of Research at SickKids. "This ranking reinforces that SickKids truly is a global leader in child health."

As Canada’s largest hospital-based child health research institute, SickKids strives to achieve research excellence, driven by our vision of Healthier Children. A Better World. SickKids’ research programs cover the spectrum of child health from wellness and normal development to causes of diseases, diagnostics, treatments and therapies.
