“It is an incredible honour to receive this recognition from the International Pediatric Association,” says Bhutta, who is a Co-Director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health and Senior Scientist in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program. “Improving the health and well-being of children has been at the heart of my work, and this award is a testament to the collective efforts of colleagues and paediatricians worldwide who share this common mission.”

Bhutta has been instrumental in advancing maternal, newborn and child health, leading research that has shaped global health policies and interventions. Also serving as the Robert Harding Chair in Global Child Health at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and Founding Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development at Aga Khan University, his work continues to impact maternal and child health outcomes on a global scale. His commitment to improving health systems and promoting equity globally has earned him numerous accolades, including his recent appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honours.

Beyond his groundbreaking research and advocacy, Bhutta has played a key leadership role within the IPA. He served as IPA president from 2016 to 2019 and treasurer from 2007 to 2013. He remains actively involved in the IPA as chair of the Working Group on School-Age Children.

“The IPA has been a longstanding global advocate for child health globally for over a century and I am extremely privileged and proud to have been part of its journey,” says Bhutta. “I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to address the evolving challenges in paediatric health worldwide.”
