Biography

Dr. Muthusami leads the Neurointerventional program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto where he treats and looks after children with cerebrovascular pathologies like vein of Galen malformations, brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. He pioneered Canada’s largest intra-arterial chemotherapy service for babies with retinoblastoma and is the Neurointerventional lead of the Acute Stroke Service at SickKids. He is part of the multidisciplinary Neurovascular Clinic for children at SickKids, a referral hub where children with cerebrovascular pathologies from across Canada are seen and treatment decisions made. He is a clinical member of the Stroke Imaging Lab for Children, and the Center for Image Guided Interventions and Therapeutic Innovations, as well as a clinical-research member of the Canadian Retinoblastoma Research Advisory Board. For his contributions, Dr. Muthusami was awarded the SickKids President’s Award in 2020. 
 

Research:

As co-lead of the Neurovascular Program at the Center for Brain and Mental Health in SickKids, Dr. Muthusami’s research is focused on advancing the understanding of pediatric neurovascular diseases and improving outcomes from neurointerventional therapies in children. He is actively involved in studying the use of cutting-edge technology like 3D-printing, artificial intelligence and virtual reality for improving outcomes in neurointerventional therapies, and as educational tools for training the next generation of experts in the field. As part of several collaborative networks across North America and globally, he continues to innovate and translate practice-relevant questions in his field. He has participated in and led several Canadian and international guideline committees, conference organization committees as well as research consortiums for improving the current understanding of pediatric neurovascular diseases. He has published more than 100 papers and book chapters and has supervised several research students. He is regularly invited to several national and international conferences as speaker, moderator and panel expert on pediatric neurovascular and neurointerventional topics.
