Grace Evelyn Simpson Reeves Awards

The Grace Evelyn Simpson Reeves awards recognize SickKids nurses for demonstrated excellence in nursing practice, education, leadership or research innovation. An individual nurse or a team may be nominated for an award. Nominations are submitted by members of the SickKids staff, a patient or their family, or a student who has worked closely with the nominee.

Nursing Practice Award

Nursing Practice Award

This award is open to all individual SickKids nurses who demonstrate outstanding achievement in nursing practice.  This award will be presented to the nurse who:

  • Demonstrates commitment to child and family centred care
  • Makes a significant contribution to a specific area of clinical practice
  • Embraces change as an opportunity for professional growth and learning
  • Provides leadership to others with respect to issues and trends in nursing practice
  • Is an exemplary role model in the provision of evidence-informed patient care
  • Advances the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Nursing Research and Evaluation Award

This award is open to all SickKids nurses who are currently engaged in research and/or large scale program evaluation. The award will be presented to the nurse who demonstrates the value of nursing in the research context by:

  • Advancing practice through involvement in research and/or large scale program
  • Acting as a role model and being recognized as a resource regarding the research/evaluation process
  • Contributing to knowledge translation activities to share findings and support evidence-informed practices
  • Pursuing opportunities to enhance knowledge of self and others related to research/evaluation in alignment with the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Nursing Leadership Award

This award is open to all SickKids nurses who exemplify leadership in nursing (e.g. in management, clinical care, projects and/or special initiatives, etc). The award will be presented to the nurse who:

  • Assumes a leadership role in changing the culture of health care delivery
  • Facilitates excellence in child and family centred care
  • Demonstrates a commitment to staff development and interprofessional collaboration
  • Acts as a change agent to develop strategies to advance the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Advanced Practice Nursing Award

This award is open to all SickKids nurses who demonstrate excellence in the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner. The award will be presented to the advanced practice nurse who:

  • Advances professional nursing practice
  • Demonstrates leadership in creatively managing complex patient and family situations
  • Develops creative and innovative strategies to incorporate and promote evidence-informed practice and interprofessional collaboration
  • Is highly regarded as a role model and mentor to peers internal and external to SickKids
  • Demonstrates proactive leadership as a change agent to advance the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Nursing Team Award

This award is open to a team of nurses (and may include specific interprofessional members) who demonstrate an exceptional group effort in the advancement of clinical care. All members of the team must demonstrate excellence in their roles and contribute to the outcomes of the team.  This award will be presented to the nursing team that:

  • Demonstrates their commitment to child and family centred care
  • Demonstrates excellence in functioning as a team
  • Contributes to the development of others within and outside of the team
  • Contributes to strengthening clinical practice and improving patient care
  • Develops creative and innovative strategies to advance the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Nursing Education Award

This award is open to all SickKids nurses who demonstrate excellence in education of staff, patients and/or families (e.g., Interprofessional Education Specialist, Preceptor, Clinical Support Nurse, Clinical Orientation Support Nurse, Staff Nurse, Informatics Nurse, etc). The award will be presented to the nurse who:

  • Creatively develops educational programs and/or opportunities that meet the learning needs of others
  • Uses creative and innovative teaching methods and evaluation strategies
  • Contributes to development of clinical and professional expertise and/or building care provision capacity in patients and families
  • Promotes a culture of education and continuous learning aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Nursing Innovation Award (Individual /Team)

This award is open to all SickKids nurses who demonstrate excellence in ‘non-traditional’ roles (e.g. informatics, technology, quality, project management, coordination, occupational health, etc). The award will be presented to the nurse/team who:

  • Makes a significant contribution working on strategic initiatives, that support the advancement of nursing practice and/or patient care practices and processes, either directly or indirectly
  • Contributes to professional learning and expertise in a particular aspect of nursing
  • Demonstrates leadership role in managing departmental/organizational change related to a specific area of practice/workflow
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and problem-solving skills to guide evidence-based decisions related to a specific area of practice/workflow
  • Advances the organization’s goals and objectives

 

Career Achievement Award

This award is open to all SickKids nurses, in any role, who have been part of the organization for 15 years or more. The award will be presented to the nurse who exemplifies excellence in the following:

  • Makes a significant contribution in supporting the advancement of nursing practice at SickKids
  • Demonstrates a commitment to child and family centred care, within an interprofessional framework
  • Influences the development, growth, and learning of current and future nurses
  • Regarded by nursing peers as an exemplary role model and leader
  • Career achievements are aligned with the organization’s goals and objectives
