About the Clinic

The Genetic and Electrolyte Clinic is a specialized clinic for the care of patients with a variety of different genetic disorders that affect their kidneys. It also cares for children who have electrolyte and acid base balance abnormalities caused by their kidneys. We are committed to delivering leading-edge specialized care and work alongside researchers to improve our treatments.

Pre-appointment Instructions

Important pre-appointment instructions:

Unless your child has been instructed to fast, your child is permitted to eat and drink as normal.

Directions:

The first thing to do is register at the Nephrology Clinic. The Genetic and Electrolyte Clinic is part of the Nephrology Clinic, located on the Main Floor near the Black Wing elevators.

From the University Avenue entrance, turn right at the first hallway (towards Shoppers Drug Mart). Once in front of Shoppers Drug Mart, walk down the main hall (Main Street), past the Black Wing elevators and turn left down the first hallway. The clinic is on the left side of the hall, by the Plastics Clinic.

From the Elizabeth Street entrance and parking garage elevators, walk down Main Street towards Shoppers Drug Mart. At the Family Centre/library turn right, down the hall. We are the first clinic you will find on the left side of this hall.

What to Expect During Your Visit

After registration, you will be given requisitions for a urine sample and blood work (if needed) and you may be directed to the Ultrasound Department (if one has been ordered). Please collect the urine sample in the bottle provided and drop it in the blue bin. If your child is in diapers, one of the clinic nurses will apply a urine bag when your child is brought into the clinic. If blood work is needed you will be directed to the Ambulatory Care Centre.

Once all the testing has been completed please check back in at the front desk to let them know you are done. You will then be asked to sit in the waiting room which is located in the main hallway across from the Family Centre. A nurse will call your child’s name when it is your turn to come into clinic. The nurse will measure your child’s height, weight and blood pressure. You will then be seen by one of the doctors. SickKids is a teaching hospital where you may be seen by a medical student, resident or a fellow who will do an initial assessment and subsequently review with a staff nephrologist, who will then come to discuss the results and the plan of care.

Please ensure you obtain new prescriptions for any kidney medications prior to leaving the clinic.

Genetic investigations for your child, siblings, parent or other relatives may be a part of your visit. For the test itself we will need only a small volume of blood. However, before collecting the blood we will explain the requested test, its rational and implications/complications and obtain your consent.

Appointments may take an extended period of time and we appreciate your patience.
